Exerpts from a Blog originally posted on Dale's MySpace
Here
we are…at the end of another year in recording. Many moments of musical
excitement happened up at my studio, Electric Canyon
(EC),
this past year. As the owner and engineer, I just capture the magic as it
flies by… created by musicians, artists-friends new and old together in this
space and time. (music is, after all, art through time). I will attempt to
outline the '07 recording projects year as best to my recollection. If I
leave a band or artist out…pre-apologies …send me a reminder. – Dale Snale
Alli Battaglia and the Musical
Brewing Company
www.allibattaglia.com
www.myspace.com/allibattagliathemusicalbrewingcompany
… finished and released their
first album at
Electric
Canyon. This album defines what
in the music field we call 'album craft'. That means the album is a
complete work in which tremendous musical love, energy and persistence is
crafted into a work of art. Countless hours were spent recording; Alli, the
band and many guest artists until the final performances beautifully mixed
together.
Mathew and Alli took the high
road to reach their sonic vision and we all grew in the process. The final
mixes were taken to Bernie Grundman Mastering (www.berniegrundmanmastering.com)
in
Hollywood for the final sheen.
Hear For Now
www.myspace/hearfornow
…released their first album which
we recorded mostly in 2006. In November '07 we embarked on their second
album at EC. The basic tracks for this album were recorded totally live,
with the studio doors kicked open and amps and vocal monitors blaring away.
Video was also recorded for release on the internet and/or enhanced CD. To
be completed it in 2008.
Julian
www.myspace.com/juliansolo
www.myspace.com/juliantheapostate
…from Hear for Now recorded a
solo album summer '07 before disembarking on a cross country journey to
N.Y.C. with solo gigs along the way. We had fun cranking out the tunes
before his Keoracian voyage.
Carly Anne
www.myspace.com/acousticcarlyann
…finished her first album spring
'07 started in '06. This solo effort was recorded in her natural
performance technique. Voice and guitar at the same time in the room. A
few songs were recorded each session then reviewed. The following sessions
we would rerecord sessions until the perfect mood was captured. After
recording 20-something songs, we parlayed down to the best. You can buy a
CD off the stage at her shows.
Bob Christiensen
…has been at work since February
07 on his first album after 30 some odd years of performing. At the
cajoling of many of his long time music enthusiast friends, Bob assembled
some of Chico's best session cats with the help of his son, my long time
music compadre in the 80's, Matt Christiensen.. Having put the bass down
for a decade to focus on his family and career, Matt recently picked up the
bass to join Mossy Creek.
Bob's album is being crafted to
represent a broad span of musical and social influences in the
Americana tradition. We're rounding the
corner toward completion and at the advise of his long time producer friend
who has listened to the tracks, just having fun along the way.
Dugan & Bernie
The first release of this married
duo was early 07, though mostly recorded in late 06. An eclectic mix of
sometimes satirical tunes represents their diversity including finger
picking rockabilly, soulful Spanish ballads and yodeling. Bernie plays bass
guitar, drums, and sings (or yodels) all at once. Though listening to this
enjoyable album, one would never realize it without being told. All the
songs were recorded live (vocals and instruments) which is a testimonial to
their musicianship. As Forbestown residents, they seldom play in
Chico proper, But if you stumble across
this duo in the hills, you'll be entertained with hilarious originals such
as the PMS Blues, Heavy Drinking, and Bar Wars, as well as their own
renditions of Hot Rod Lincoln, Me & My Uncle and South of the Border.
Jim Cardwell
www.cowboypoetry.com/jimcardwell.htm
The cowboy poet-musician returned
for his 2nd album, Five Silver Dollars, this time of
mostly music and some more poetry. Although not entirely 'Old West' in
nature, Jim's songs and poetry reflects the contemporary West with songs
titled Los Banos Bypass Blues, and 16 Pills and poetry like
Pink Pagoda…testimonials to the current hot topics like freeway traffic,
healthcare costs, and consumerism. His poety is solid delivery ala public
radio style, and his songs are sometimes reminiscent of Dr. Demento satire.
Jim performs all over our 21st century West from Los Banos to the
Annual Cowboy Poetry event in Elko
Nevada.
Fight Music
www.myspace.com/fightmusicband
…has recorded their second album
at EC. The album contains classic and modern Punk Rock anthems of their own
design. It was much fun to record their 'sophomore' album taking more time
to get the performances just right, the vocals just so, and talk some
philosophy with Uncle Logan & the guys.
The Funnels
www.myspace.com/thefunnels
That's Right! The Funnels
released their one and only CD based on recordings spanning their
Chico reign from 1984 to 1999. If you
don't know any old
Chico music history, Los Funnels were
Chico News and Review's 'Best Band' five years running making them 'Living
Legends' in the category. The two CD set has material from their original
LP Record from '85, live concert and radio tracks, studio stuff from David
Grow's Mother's Recording and Cloud Nine Studios, and most touching of all,
songs recorded by Guitarist/Vocalist Jimmy Richards at home during after his
diagnosis of terminal cancer in 1995(also my founding business partner).
These two song were sent to Funnel keyboard player, Kent Hooper, in
Nashville who masterfully produced the
never before heard tracks into fully produced songs. Silence is a
full epic 80's rock sound complete with all the trimmings. The second is
strictly Jimmy performing all part's in a stripped down reggae groove. It
is obvious
Kent spent hours getting these
tunes turned into the wonderful, until now unheard, Funnels songs.
Kent took all the songs compiled
by drummer, Paul Bruce, and masterfully cleaned them up. I worked on the
final sequencing of the songs with Paul to execute the final mastering
touches.
Skippy Tornado
www.myspace.com/skippytornado
Skippy just mixed a kids album at
EC that he recorded in GarageBand (Apple Computer's native recording
program) in the Bay Area. This was his first original song-writing since,
Frat Boy Drug Bust and Booger Sugar Shack in the late '80's
when he was original keyboardist for Brutillicus Maximus. Those songs were
demo recorded at my house on
Hazel Street in '86 and unbeknownst
to the band until this blog, I helped write them. Skippy moved to the Bay
15 years ago and formed a 13 piece disco band, Superbooty, which played over
350 shows and had various former Chicoan's in the line up from time to
time.
The new album is targeted
for preteens featuring heavy guitars, pounding drums, and his legendary
screaming voice in songs such as Barfed in My Backpack and My
Teacher is an Alien. We had good fun mixing it in his computer rig at
EC (this saved time and my mixing adjustments could be applied to his future
projects as part of his 'sound'.) Garage Band was really easy to work and
sounds very good. Sometimes it is more efficient, time wise, to keep the
project in its native recording device and bring that to
Electric
Canyon for a listen in the
control room then make adjustments. I encourage artists to try this
approach if they record at home. Skippy was really happy to have the
project taken to a new level of professionalism and the songs are slated for
internet release sometime in early 2008. Yeeeeeeeaaaaaaahhhhhhhh!!!!!
Geoff Baker
www.geoff-baker.com
www.myspace.com/geoffbaker
Geoff has been working on tracks
for his new album coming out 2008. Many of the tracks were originally
recorded in a
New Jersey studio. I have been doing
some overdubs and much of the complicated edits which he says has saved him
bunches of time. He brings up a hard drive with the tracks and a 'to do'
list to tackle. After the session, then he takes it home and works on it
more. His meticulous attention to musical vibe and detail is going render a
wonderful album.
Jeff Jenke and
The Neoteric Swing Orchestra
http://cdbaby.com/cd/tnso
Loose Change, a big
band/swing album, featuring Nor Cal players, has been released. After
recording the band at the
Paradise Performing Arts Center in 2006 as a
recording space (not a live performance), We recorded each tune twice using
my recording truck and then took the audio to EC for editing and mixing.
The result is 'new Jazz' arrangements with a classic Big Band sound
sonically reminiscent of the 30's though 70's era. During our project, Jeff
went to the last Big Band concert at the legendary Sands in
Las Vegas as a fan. The end of an
era?...Perhaps, but with guys like Jeff composing and arranging, the music
will live on. He hopes to have some of these charts available for high
school and college bands.
Superboar
www.myspace.com/superboar
Just finished (I think) the final
mixes for
Chico's rock group featuring veterans of
the local scene.
Electric Circus (Live)
www.electriccircus.com
www.myspace.com/electriccircus
As many of you in
Chico may know, Electric Circus hit the
stage for a couple shows summer '07 that were a hoot. I was behind the live
mixing board on both occasions and recorded multitrack audio for them also.
We had some aspirations to get EC into EC to record in the studio… (yes, by
the way, my studios initials are an homage to said band's initials, as well
as the once Jimi Hendrix owned facility, Electric Lady Studios, in N.Y.C.,
which is still in operation having studio B and C recently redesigned by my
studio designer, Wes Lachot
www.weslachot.com
)…but alas, Circus bass player, Chris Hendersen, fled for his winter digs in
Mazatlan before it could happen. Maybe next year…a new album…"we'll see my
pretty" -WWotW.
Izzy Osborne
www.myspace.com/izzyozborne
This summer I journeyed north to
my good buddies studio in Tehema County to record a demo for his band (as it
can be hard to be on both side of glass at the same time-engineering while
giving one's all artistically is awkward. This is why most every sound
engineer in
Chico has recorded with me over the years)
Izzy's group is quite good as we are all familiar with these classic songs
by now, as listeners and players. He performs all around Nor Cal and needed
a fresh demo to command better, shows and venues (a great reason to record)
which they have done. Check them out when you're feeling nostalgic about
Metal &/or need a good laugh. Izzy's friggin' funny! ('Where's
Sharon?')
Children's
Choir of Chico
www.csuchico.edu/mus/choir/
Recorded the Spring 2007 concert
which I took back to EC for mixing. The CD is available through the Choir.
Susan Tevis' masterful direction pulls magical performances out of the
kids. Dozens of inspired kids sining is always magical.
The Living Alliance of Love
www.allianceoflove.com
www.myspace.com/livingallainceoflove
Released their second CD, Soul Union, in 2007. Overdubs of guest
artists were recorded at EC in 2006. An artistic melding of infectious bass
and drum grooves, dreamy electronica, and the conscious lyrical raps of
Johnny Dutro, and some fantastic female guest artists.
Johhny Dutro
… has embarked on a new album
this time utilizing organic(acoustic) percussion recorded at EC combined
into grooves later by Johnny on his home rig. Still in its early stages,
this work should prove soulful as always.
Duane Howard
Recorded a trumpet CD based on
Gospel arrangements he has been collecting since the '60's. The songs
reflect Duane's mature playing style and experience with the instrument.
The songs include classics like Swing Low Sweet Chariot and
Sweet
Beulah
Land with a
reverberant glow about them.
John
McKinley-The Fat Stickeys
www.myspace.com/thefatstickys
Long time Chico musician (Jack
Damit of Brut Max, Whacker and countless others) has embarked on a rock
project with Bobby (Barbara) Manning on bass, and Mike Erpino on drums.
We've tracked bass, drums and guitar, done some guitar overdubs that sound
utterly humungous. We will be working on the project more in the upcoming
months.
Paradise Symphony
www.paradisesymphony.org
Recorded the 2007 Concert Series
at the Performing Arts Center which is now available on CD. Recorded in my
truck and then mixed at the studio, this recording includes Peter and the
Wolf, narrated by
Paradise's Mayor Woody.
Klezbillies
www.myspace.com/klezrocks
…finished their Klezmer-Acoustic-Grass
album. What an eclectic mix recorded at EC, mostly live, with a few solo
overdubs.
Brendon Alvord
and the Hummingbirds
www.myspace.com/brendonalvord
www.brendonalvord.com
Brendon and his gang set off to
record an album on '06 and into '07 at EC. Many Many tracks were laid
down. Then we laid down some more. We had some good times in the studio
working with producers Ed and Laurie. Ed was long time Devo soundman in the
70's. The tracks were taken to there home base in
Redding for more tracks to be laid down
and mixed by Ed. I'm not sure if the band is still together, but Brendon
will continue to create and perform no matter what.
Bare Bones
www.myspace.com/barebonesmusic
Chico rock band recorded a hybrid
live/studio album in which we captured a show live at Off Limits (now
Nick's) in
Chico. This was the idea of Ryan and Jeff
(the rhythm section) who have tremendous live energy. The vocals were
redone in the controlled studio production environment along with a couple
guitar parts (many 'live' albums are done this way without mention of this
for fear they are 'cheating' or something…c'mon people who think it's
cheating, If the production sounds better and is an efficient use of
time[=money] to get a superb product-go for it. Would that mean that movies
are cheating because they are not performed on stage in their entirety? –nuff
philosophy-I just record with the production aesthetic the artist
desires and stick to it. For
Sierra Nevada's Center Stage TV program, for
instance, there can be no fixes cause of the video associated with the
recording. Sometimes a band will play the song twice or record multiple
nights if there is a performance glitch. ) Anyway, the Bare Bones album
sounds really good. But alas, the CD release was the last show, in that
incarnation as Jeff took a job on SoCal. I recently saw George downtown and
He said they're workin' some stuff.
The Fabulous
Hofner Brothers
www.myspace.com/thefabuloushofnerbrothers
Released their live album March
2007, recorded at
Chico's Concert in the Park 2006, then
mixed by Kirby and myself sporadically over the following nine months. The
album brings back the Chico Blues glory years of the 80's & 90's in
Chico. Blues Movers at the Blue Max (now
Herried Music), Ralph Shine Band (who I saw open for Stevie Ray Vaughn at
Butte College in '84-also the first time I saw Dana Olsen and Jimmy Faye
perform), Danny West (first released CD I ever recorded, he was proud of
that and made mention of it to me between musical and philosophical
diatribe.), and I'll make mention of my blues group, the Spare Parts.
Crazy Grass
www.myspace.com/crazygrass
There at it again…recording
tracks for a new album for future release. The basic tracks went down like
butter. Really good arrangements, very prepared…it's just a matter of time
now.
Mastering
Montuno Salad
www.montunosalad.com
Redding's Dave Barnett has compiled a very
nice collection of
North
Valley impresarios to complete a
wonderfully rhythmic and dynamic Jazz album, Montunotes. Nearing
completion of the final mixes, Dave contacted me for a premastering
consultation/listen through in the EC control room. He still was finishing
up the final touches on some of the mixes and was unsure of how some of the
instruments were blending in the mixes. We made a sort of 'laundry list' of
how I would approach mastering at this stage, and what would be nice 'if' we
could re-mix it so 'this or that' fitted together better. Though it sounded
really good and could have been mastered from his mixes, Dave went in and
remixed a number number of those songs based on our notes. He then sent
those mixes to me for mastering. The final masters rendered Dave one happy
camper with late night phone calls of 'Thanks Dale'.
Mike Wofchuck
http://www.newsreview.com/chico/Content?oid=345196
Mike recorded his album,
Flight, at home over the past couple years playing all instruments and
singing. Karisha guest sang on a couple tracks also. When his mixes were
done, he bought them up to EC where we performed the final mastering
touches. Emotionally overwhelmed at the completion of his creation process,
he cheerfully quipped from the couch at EC, 'This is great! I can sit back
while you make the adjustments to the mix.' These tunes represent his
musical journey through the years and his world travels. I hear little bits
of
India, the 60's and the Mother
Hips (rhythmically speaking), in this dreamy trance like CD that will
sometimes play in my over and over in my car. We talked music recording
philosophy and what gear that could take his future recording to the next
level. (picking my brain is an advantage to booking time at EC as I love to
help musicians get the most out of recording music….after all, I truly want
to do what I can to help our music scene flourish)
Karisha
http://karisha.info/up-from-within
http://www.newsreview.com/chico/Content?oid=345196
Karisha recorded a soulful set of
songs with her close friend, Mike Wofchuck, which he recommended me to
master shortly after his experience at EC. The beauty of this record speaks
to a couple years recording with Mike, egging each other on, to get the best
vibe and performances possible. A co-release party for Mike and Karisha's
CD was held at the Women's Center and it was a night to remember for all.
Chico News and Review Music Compilation v.3 & 4
…was released in 2007 containing
yet another mish mosh of
Chico's current music greats. My role at
EC was to master the 34 songs that Chris Caraway from the News and Review
sequenced into a sonically cohesive blend. The song entries submitted by
the bands came from a multitude of different environments (five were
recorded at EC). Regardless of where they were created, it is apparent from
my work on
Chico compilations over the years that
local music production is getting better and better across the board. Some
of the songs needed no adjustment whatsoever (nice job John Staedler), most
just needed the volumes bumped so they were consistent and the listener
would not have to mess with their volume knob from song to song. Some songs
needed a little equalizing of the bass and treble, again so the listener has
a consistent listen through. That is a generalization of what mastering
is. The artful aspect is getting the song louder without making any peaks
go over the top (0dBfs) limit which can make audible clipping noises on some
CD players (okay -.3dBfs for you techno nerds so don't call me on it). It
really gets deep and I'm simplifying how it's done for easier
understanding. If songs are brought up to max volume with plug in effects
like 'normalization' and 'maximizing' things get loud fast, but in turn can
sound like overstressed, unmusical crap if not done very carefully
and tastefully. This we call in the industry the 'loudness wars' and 'it
sucks' is the unanimous contention at trade conferences. One company makes
a record loud and the next must make theirs louder till all depth and
musicality starts to diminish. All these factors are carefully weighed in
the mastering process. It involves much trial and comparison to make sure it
sounds better and doesn't mess up the artist's sonic intention.
That's the recording year in
review. I'm going to post the 2007 live sound reinforcement year in review
soon. Live sound had a great year too, with the purchase of a Meyers
Laboratories sound system which sounds really nice.

Dale has
been recording live performances for the upcoming television
series, Sierra Center Stage. Shows
are listed below in the credits. The
first four episodes were released to public television stations nationally
in 2004. The completed 13 episode
series is now airing nationwide on select Public

Dale’s role has been to provide a mobile 48-track audio truck and
record the band while an 8+ camera crew shoots the video at the Sierra
